Programs

ParaSport and Recreation PEI School Award Program

The ParaSport and Recreation PEI School Award Program was created through generous support from people throughout the province of Prince Edward Island.  This program is intended to recognize students with a physical disability that are enrolled in any of the three levels of school and have demonstrated an interest and involvement in recreation and/or sport.  The awards have a value of $25.00 for elementary school students and $50.00 for intermediate school students and $75.00 for high school students.  

Eligibility

  • Enrolled in the PEI School System;
  • Individual who has a physical disability;
  • Active in sport/recreation programs at the community or school level.

Requirements

  • A School staff member will complete the School Award Nomination Form. 
  • Nominations must be received by June 4, 2010.

These awards will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the organization that is held in June.

ParaSport and Recreation PEI Scholarships

ParaSport and Recreation PEI is pleased to offer 2-$500.00 Scholarships to two deserving applicants with a physical disability that are entering university/college in the ensuing year.  The recipient will be selected by the Board of Directors and the award will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the organization that is held in June.

Bridging the Gap "Getting Physically Active"

Bridging the Gap (BTG) is a national program that designed to introduce and support the continued participation of individuals with physical disabilities in wheelchair sports and recreational activities. This is achieved through hosting “Have a Go” events that provide opportunities for individuals to experience a variety of wheelchair sports in a fun supportive atmosphere. By participating in BTG programs, you will become physically active and as a result, can improve your quality of life.

Wheelchair Basketball School Program

ParaSport and Recreation PEI offers wheelchair basketball to Island schools throughout the school year. Following the demonstration, 8-10 wheelchairs are left at the school so the sport of wheelchair basketball can included in the physical education curriculum. Contact the ParaSport and Recreation PEI office to book a demonstration and the wheelchairs for your school.


Equipment Loan Program

ParaSport and Recreation PEI has an equipment loan program to minimize the financial burden of participating in sport. This aims to increase the number of people with physical disabilities becoming physically active in recreation and sport. The following equipment is available:

  • Basketball Wheelchairs
  • A Tennis Wheelchair, rackets, balls and a net
  • Handcycles
  • Hockey Sleds and picks
  • Goalballs and eye shades
  • Boccia Set
  • Moving to Inclusion Equipment Bags - adapted equipment and toys for low organized games

Services

Moving To Inclusion Training

Moving to Inclusion is an education program that was designed for school teachers but can be useful to any one that works directly with people with physical disabilities. The training teaches a step by step process on how to include a person with a physical disability into a recreation/sport program. It provides the trainee with tools, strategies and creative program adaptation ideas.
